Out of Province

Written and directed by David Allan King
December 7 - 8, 2007 Studio 303 Montreal

out-of-provinceDesigned by: Bradley Colbourne, Videography by Kirk Wight

One of the world’s first experiments with developing theatre for the Web. An anthology of monologues shot in Montreal theatres with professional actors,Out of Province uses a theatrical aesthetic to explore the possibility of bringing live theatre to your screen. Sprung from real-life interviews about coming out with individuals in each province across Canada, the project presents a Canadian map to the visitor, where they can pinpoint Canadian locations to zoom in on diverse, touching and often hilarious coming out experiences. Winner of the Montreal Mirror’s 2001 “Noisemaker of the Year” Award, creator David Allan King received the Montreal Mayor’s Award the same year as Young Enterpreneur for the project’s creation.

lile-handelCreated and performed by Bulgarian visiting artist Ivo Dimchev. After an acclaimed European tour, Ivo Dimchev visits Montreal with his highly physical Lili Handel, a visceral environment of movement and voice in an interactive performance where the body is explored as an object of consumption. Dimchev will also teach a physically intensive, master class for performers during the week of his performance. “Ivo Dimchev’s powerful solo exposes the body as a multi-expressive reality. It reminds us that the body is not merely a form, to be perceived mainly visually, but that it has a constitutive inside.

Dimchev extends this interiority to the audience by all means, voice, movement, speech even his blood, and engages them viscerally.” - Gurur Ertem“ Lili Handel is the most elegant excessive creation and a very special physical performance of Ivo Dimchev. As special as the blood which the performer drains off of his body and offers it at auction to the audience to be able to estimate in money the merits of what they see and the one they see. The androgynous dancer meets you with a body which has fallen in one of the sweetest addictions — the joy and impotence of being itself.” - Eliza Mateeva, Egoist magazine.
