The Search Begins for OUT’s Future Leader

Press Release: For Immediate Release
Montreal, July 12, 2009

Thanks to Aquanodd Labs, OUT launches a new website this summer alongside its announcement of the search for a new Artistic Director.

After the smash success of last year’s Factory Project, OUT is thrilled to promote the continued growth of several installations from the event throughout Québec and Canada. Visit our site’s “Events” and “Out Post” sections to find out more on the activities of our beloved “Factory artists” and others celebrating queer culture in the arts. Thanks also go out to our 2008-2009 partners for OUT’s endeavours, including Canada Council for the Arts, the Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation, and media sponsors like 2B Magazine, CKUT Radio, GayGuideToronto.com, HOUR, OUT TV, Outlooks and Proud FM. We look forward to their support in 2009-2010 as OUT continues to round up private and public sponsorships for its season activities.

Celebrating a dozen seasons at the helm, OUT’s co-founding Artistic Director David Allan King moves into the realm of freelance directing and teaching in 2010, continuing his written projects as playwright and arts, culture and travel contributor for magazines across Canada.

“This is such a tough decision,” says King, “but it’s the right time. I’m so close to this company, and now the baby is all growed up.’

‘When I reflect on how much OUT’s battled the odds,” adds King, “on how many styles we’ve explored, and on how far queer performing arts has refined since OUT’s inception, I’m speechless. We now have a strong canon of queer creation and artists to nurture in Canada, along with a wealth of published material that reflects the history of queer performing arts in Canada. Supporting everything from new plays in development to  international programming, burlesque and cabaret, OUT’s been able to truly explore queer culture, history and identity as per its mandate, with more to come. I’m so proud to have planted a seed for that continued development, as we await a new leader to grab our bull by the horns for a wild, interdisciplinary ride into the future.”

King, alongside OUT’s board of directors, has begun an Artistic Director search during 2009-2010 to integrate one or more parties into OUT’s team who are interested in taking on the GLBTQ, project-based company to incubate their own interdisciplinary, queer projects. The search will be nation-wide.

For more info on the search visit OUT’s online bulletin board “The OUTPost” at out.ca.

Celebrating a dozen years in the performing arts, OUT is devoted to creating a professional stage for performing arts, encouraging private and public support for its site-specific events. OUT is also the creator and a member of Canada’s Pink Network (Réseau rose), an online directory connecting similar Canadian artists and companies to one another through resource-sharing and regular networking. Visit the Pink Network’s new home this Fall at pinknetwork.ca.

OUT’s audience can get more info on what’s happening in queer performing arts as well as event reminders on OUT’s shows, by signing up for its crazy, sporadic newsletters. Check out OUT’s events page and the bulletin board “Out Post” and contribute your own voice to OUT’s website at out.ca.
